HLSDB January Diaper Distribution: Impact, Challenges, and What’s Next

On January 27 2026, the Houston Lone Star Diaper Bank (HLSDB) held our first diaper distribution event of the year. Thanks to the continued generosity of our donors, partners, and volunteers, we were able to support 146 families experiencing diaper need across our community.

From the 300 prepared kits, families received essential items they rely on every single day:

  • 3,650 baby diapers

  • 159,884 baby wipes

  • 852 period products

  • 730 PPE face masks

  • 80 adult diapers

  • 500 adult wipes

  • 2,428 tins of infant formula and toddler snacks

Each kit was carefully designed to help caregivers stretch already-tight household budgets while maintaining health, dignity, and peace of mind. These are not “extras” — they are necessities.

The Reality Behind the Numbers

While we are incredibly proud of what was distributed, we also want to be transparent about a challenge we continue to face: less than 50% of registered families were able to attend this distribution.

This is something we take seriously, because every unused kit represents a family we could have helped but didn’t reach.

There are two key factors we believe are contributing to lower turnout:

1. Timing Constraints

HLSDB distribution events currently take place on weekdays, not weekends. This is not a preference — it is a reality of how our organization operates today.

Our staff and event support are made up of volunteers who are generously giving their time during corporate work hours. At this stage, we do not have the staffing or funding required to safely and consistently run weekend distributions.

We understand that weekday events can be difficult for families juggling:

  • Work schedules

  • School drop-offs and pick-ups

  • Childcare responsibilities

This limitation is frustrating for us too, but it is the only way we can continue to operate responsibly while serving as many families as possible.

2. Transportation Barriers

Transportation continues to be one of the biggest — and most overlooked — obstacles families face.

Even when families successfully secure a ticket, getting to the distribution location can be challenging due to:

  • Limited access to a vehicle

  • Inflexible public transportation routes or schedules

  • The cost of rideshares or fuel

  • Caring for multiple children or infants

If a family cannot physically get to us, the support may as well not exist.

What We’re Doing to Improve Access

Lower turnout is not something we accept as inevitable. It is a problem we are actively working to solve.

We are currently exploring options to make diaper distributions more accessible, including:

  • Evaluating alternative locations that may be closer to where families live

  • Exploring partnerships that could help reduce transportation barriers

  • Assessing whether staggered pickup windows or additional distribution days are feasible

  • Reviewing our registration and communication process to ensure expectations are clear and fair

These solutions take time, funding, and partnership — but families deserve us to keep trying.

A Note on Responsible Registration

We also want to sincerely thank the families who:

  • Registered thoughtfully

  • Arrived during their scheduled window

  • Communicated when they were unable to attend

Your cooperation allows us to:

  • Serve families more efficiently

  • Reduce waste

  • Redirect resources when possible

  • Ensure fairness for everyone seeking support

When attendance is predictable, we can help more families with the same resources.

Looking Ahead for the next diaper drive

Diaper need does not disappear after one event — and neither do we.

If you missed the January 27 distribution, we encourage you to sign up for our email notifications via the Houston Lone Star Diaper Bank website (lonestardiaperbank.org) so you’ll be alerted as soon as future distribution events open for registration.

If you are a community partner, employer, or organization interested in supporting expanded access — whether through funding, space, transportation solutions, or volunteer support — we would love to hear from you.

Together, we can continue working toward a Houston where no caregiver has to choose between diapers and other basic necessities.

💛 Thank you for standing with Houston Lone Star Diaper Bank and the families we serve.
