When Free Support Goes Unused: Why Attendance Matters at Diaper Distribution Events

At the Houston Lone Star Diaper Bank, every diaper distribution day is carefully planned with one goal in mind: making sure families in our community have access to essential baby care items when they need them most.

For our April distribution event, we prepared 300 family support kits packed with essential supplies — including diapers, baby wipes, infant formula, period products, and other hygiene items.

But on event day, only 144 kits were collected.

That means more than half of the available support went unclaimed.

While we’re incredibly grateful to have helped the 144 families who attended, this ongoing trend creates a growing challenge for our team.

Why This Matters

Each event requires significant planning, time, volunteer coordination, and donated resources.

When tickets are reserved but families do not attend, it creates several issues:

  • It prevents other families from accessing support.

Our events often have waitlists or families trying to secure tickets after they’re fully allocated. A no-show can mean another family misses out unnecessarily.

  • It impacts our planning.

We use attendance data to determine how many supplies to prepare, how many volunteers to schedule, and how to allocate donations effectively.

  • It affects donor confidence.

Every diaper, wipe, and can of formula distributed has been donated or funded by supporters who trust us to get these essentials into the hands of families who need them.

When supplies sit uncollected, it slows that impact.

We Understand Life Happens

We know parenting is unpredictable.

Children get sick. Transportation falls through. Work schedules change. Emergencies happen.

We understand that.

But if you know you can no longer attend, canceling your ticket (or letting us know) helps us offer that support to another family.

It’s a simple action that makes a real difference.

Our Community Impact in April

Despite lower attendance, our April distribution still provided:

  • 3,600 diapers

  • 40,032 baby wipes

  • 720 PPE face masks

  • 981 period products

  • 98 cans of infant formula

That support matters.

And we want to make sure every available resource reaches families who need it.

Need Diaper Assistance?

If you're a parent or caregiver in the Houston area who needs diapers, wipes, or other essential baby care items, the Houston Lone Star Diaper Bank hosts free monthly diaper distribution events throughout the year.

Attendance is by free ticket only, with tickets released seven days before each event on a first-come, first-served basis.

Families can also sign up to receive email notifications when registration opens for the next distribution.

Learn how the program works and how to request assistance by visiting the How to Get Diapers page.
